Kitchen Renovation Project

The kitchen was basically untouched since its construction over 60 years ago, except for updated appliances, painted cupboards and installing bargain priced vinyl tiles.

The Client could not make the kitchen larger from the original size due to hot and cold air return vents located in the middle of the inside, load-bearing wall. The costs to move the vents, and the little space they would have gained were not an option they wanted to consider.

Task:
To design a kitchen that added more cabinetry and hide appliances (the fridge can be seen as soon as you walk into the front door of the house) as much as possible, but most of all warm it up. There was no insulation in the outside window wall nor was there any in the outside garage side wall. It was also important to the client to have a small sitting area.

Details:
To make the kitchen appear larger, the client chose to:

  • install oak hardwood flooring (this not only made the kitchen appear larger, it matched up well with the rest of the main floors oak hardwood, giving it a nice flow thru the home).
  • install cabinetry with straight lines, painted an off-white (Benjamin Moore OC-24). The off-white paint was also used on the trim (baseboards, doors and doorway trim).
  • install black granite counter tops that give the kitchen a bit of a contemporary look.
  • install panelled fridge/freezer and dishwasher, so they don’t become the focal point of the room.
  • purchased stainless steel cook top, built-in oven and built-in microwave/convection.
  • painted the walls a rich chocolate brown colour (Benjamin Moore HC-69)
  • install a small counter-height table – room for two people to sit comfortably
  • with a new built-in exhaust fan, the client eliminated the original ceiling light/fan.
  • seven pots lights were installed – six in the main part of the ceiling and one above the sink – all on dimmers.
  • install one glass cabinet with lighting
  • install under counter lighting
  • build cabinets to the ceiling, finishing off with crown moulding at the top.
  • move the kitchen window over approx. 4” (closer to the fridge) to accommodate standard size counter depth cabinets.
